Banga Assam H. E. & Associates Successfully Defends Central African National Accused in Failed Coup Attempt in Equatorial Guinea
Banga Assam H. E. & Associates successfully represented Mr. Ahmed Yalo, a Central African national, and seventy two (72) Chadian individuals in a high-profile case involving allegations of involvement in a failed coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea in 2018.
Mr. Yalo was accused of being one of the masterminds behind the attempted overthrow of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Following the failed operation, he was arrested by Cameroonian authorities at Kiossi, the Border between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, and placed under investigation.
At the time, Mr. Yalo’s name was also linked to suspicious financial transactions, triggering a parallel judicial investigation in the Central African Republic.

Mr. Ahmed Yalo is the brother of Sani Yalo, a known close associate of Central African President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, a connection that contributed to significant political and media attention surrounding the case.
Mr. Yalo and his co-defendants were initially sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment and ordered to pay court costs totaling 1,861,780 FCFA, to be borne jointly, with each defendant liable for 74,471 FCFA by the Military Court of Yaounde.

Our firm, Banga Assam H. E. & Associates, was entrusted with Mr. Yalo’s and his co-defendants legal defenses and logically appealed the decision and successfully overturned the conviction before the appellate court. After a thorough legal strategy and representation before competent authorities, the charges were ultimately dismissed due to lack of evidence.

This case highlights the firm’s proficiency in handling complex international criminal and political cases, and its unwavering commitment to the defense of due process and the presumption of innocence, even in matters involving sensitive geopolitical contexts.
